Thirty years of finding out why something is slow

MASM Solutions is one person. That is the whole company and it is the point — you talk to the person who builds the thing, every time.

I spent most of my career in semiconductor and instrument engineering, where the job was always some version of the same job: a process is taking too long or failing too often, go find out why and fix it. Then fifteen years in insurance and financial services, mostly looking at how small agencies really operated versus how they thought they operated.

Since 2024 I have been building automation full time. The tooling is new. The work is not.

28+ years — technical engineering

Perkin-Elmer: field service on analytical instruments across the U.S., in cancer research labs, forensics labs and refineries. Visulux: laser-based projection systems for government facilities including Strategic Air Command. KLA-Tencor for 18 of those years — senior technical support, then service manager on site at Intel’s West Coast mask shop, then development and manufacturing systems engineering. Installations across the U.S., Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Germany and France. Wrote over a hundred procedures. Cut a production cycle from nine months to six.

14 years — insurance and financial services

Agency owner and licensed advisor doing retirement and Medicare planning. Licensed in New York, Connecticut and California.

5 years — independent consultant

Contract remote work with independent insurance agencies across California, advising on products, strategy and how their client operations actually ran day to day.

Bachelor’s degree — DeVry Technical Institute and Missouri Institute of Technology.

Why small businesses, and why here

Most of what gets sold as business AI is priced for companies with a procurement department. A plumbing outfit with four trucks does not need an enterprise implementation. It needs the six things eating its Thursday afternoons to stop eating them.
